UniBg On Air started a few months ago and it is open to every student of every Department. This means very different skills among the young students that are willing to approach the Radio from a different point of view, and that’s why they chose Oxygen 2000: many features, easy to use, high quality at a very good price.

PENSIERI e AZIONI di RAI RADIO by ROBERTO SERGIO - Intervista di Claudio Astorri

News

June 17, 202118 Minutes

Interessante e istruttivo leggerle tutte. Grazie a Roberto Sergio!

Quali altre radiovisioni italiane avrebbero saputo realizzare in casa uno show come Viva Rai Play?

Capodarco l’Altro Festival 2019

Capodarco l’Altro Festival "Radio in 2019" The workshop by Axel Tech promoting innovation in the broadcasting world

Capodarco l’Altro Festival 2019

Axel Technology took part in the Capodarco l’Altro Festival 2019, the event that since 2005 aims to analyze social and environment themes by giving space to these items and by enhancing the work of journalists, authors, artists, writers, directors and audio/video communication specialists working in this field. This meeting takes place in the Community of Capodarco, directed by Don Vinicio Albanesi.

The program of the festival included numerous appointments, among which stands out ‘Radio in 2019’, a free workshop promoted by the two communication masters Claudio Astorri and Andrea Pellizzari. The event focused on the role of Visual Radio, the new communication way that combines visual contents with radio production.

THE ROLE OF AXEL“Our role at the Capodarco Festival was not only as conference sponsor but also as operational and pragmatic promoter of innovation technologies for the future. Our purpose was to extend the radio range effect with particular attention also to DTT and cable tv.” explains Claudio Astorri, Radio specialist of Axel Tech, professor at Università Cattolica in Milan and consultant for some of the major Italian broadcasters. According to Astorri Visual Radio is a crucial theme for reaching a radio identity, widely supported by the June 27 workshop: “This new communication tool represents an important step for the future but, above all, it represents a very significant present, as you can see by reading our records. Data confirm that Visual Radio is the third device to be used. Even if it’s not able to compete with radio devices, it ranks before smartphones, PCs and tablets. We are talking about 4 million 500 thousand daily users”.
Many people doubt of the real role of this hybrid communication device, will it replace the dear old radio? Andrea Pellizzari, artistic director of the Capodarco Festival, conductor and author of many successful formats for Rai, Mediaset, RDS and Radio Deejay answers to this question: “I think that today there is nothing of the kind able to replace it. I believe that there are new opportunities and Visual Radio is certainly able to seize them. Its power lies in giving the opportunity to use a new communication tool, which will reach more people and will use new channels, making everything easier. We talk about an automation that helps the content production, usually very complicated because of the numerous directives to be followed at the same time. Visual radio will be able to extend the action range of those who work in the radio field. Pellizzari speaks not only of users, but also about speakers: “The subjects involved in the Visual Radio content production will be at the same level of those who work in traditional radios, they will be able to increase their own skills. This tool simplifies processes, adding new factors that were not previously present”.

CONTRIBUTE, ALWAYS – The presence of Axel Technology at the Capodarco l’Altro Festival is certainly a good opportunity to show the company skills, its participation has to be seen not as a job opportunity, but on the contrary as: the desire to be part of this great collective commitment – explains Astorri – and if Capodarco is synonymous of a social involvement, the ‘Altro Festival’ is its emblem. An example of this engagement is the ‘Weak Link’ award, focused in social communication”.
The workshop ‘Radio in 2019’, attended by the artistic director of the Festival Andrea Pellizzari, highlighted a serious lack of support paths for those who want to grow in the radio industry: “The choice to organize it as a free workshop wanted to give support to professionals who work in this field, so difficult to relate with. There are no courses nor schools, broadcasters show no interest in teaching their profession. Within the Capodarco l’Altro Festival it was also decided to create workshops for anyone involved in communication. We will extend these initiatives to those who are interested in tv, broadcasting, writing, photography and anyone who wants to do this work professionally”.

Radio Bruno chooses Axel Tech

Radio Bruno chooses Axel Tech

Claudio Astorri meets Gianni Prandi, the owner and managing director of Italian radio Radio Bruno, one of the top five local radios in the country. Their chat becomes an interesting insight on how Radio Bruno was born and how it has developed throughout the years thanks also to the help of Axel Technology’s products and support.

This is what our Claudio Astorri has written down about his interview with Prandi. Radio Bruno is one of the largest local stations in Italy; it broadcasts over markets like Milano, Bologna, Venice, Firenze with a total of 42 provinces served (Italy has 110). The weekly listeners are about 2.116.680 and with a daily cumulative of 685.530 listeners Radio Bruno has the record of the highest listenership in a province: AQH Share at 27,78% in the province of Modena. A Contemporary Hit Radio/Adult Format with a funny morning show, the typical warm engagement by hosts, newscasts each hour, big events, great and continuous interaction with the audience, Radio Bruno appears to be among the top 5 Local stations in Italy. The owner and managing director Gianni Prandi could finance a further development: the purchase of 7 more stations. Let’s talk to him…

Q – What made you start the business in Radio?
A – It all began in the mid 70’s with a friend of mine, an engineer, who taught me that it was possible to broadcast music on the air. It was a fascinating concept, a real revolution at those times. FM Radio was occupied by the State-owned channels only and they were not targeting younger audiences so I thought that given the new legal chance to create a station I would have enjoyed sharing music with listeners. It all started from this. I am still enjoying my job and that’s the reason why I keep pushing and often work on Saturdays and Sundays too.

Q – As you are the top manager at Radio Bruno since the early beginnings, which are the achievements in Engineering, Programming and Marketing & Sales you are proud of?
A – In the Engineering area the multi-platform concept is fascinating for Radio as a medium. We built it at RADIO BRUNO. We had FM transmission only but nowadays we have added DAB and Digital Terrestrial TV Broadcast, WEB Streaming, etc. Many technological changes occurred from the beginning so I must be updated continuously. As for the Programming area it is not easy to establish why the station has been so successful. My idea is that we built a strong local relationship with the audience while acting as a big national brand. In the Marketing & Sales area we probably achieved excellence thanking to an early understanding in 1988 that owning and managing a network of agents and salespeople was a key for success and growth. I also realized at those times that branding thanking to events was essential to promote listenership.

Q – Radio Bruno makes use of splits in his multi-regional coverage for both editorial and commercial contents. Is this a winning strategy?
A – We started this in the early 90’s and were the first to do so. Our idea was splitting contents in order to give to listeners in different areas the same value and the same motivation to stay with us; it is a policy that works only if you assign a reasonable amount of timing on the air for that purpose. While we air specific newscasts for one region, we have at the same time a service broadcasting to another one, and so on. The problem is the cost. This is an expensive policy. We split editorial and commercial contents in more than 10 territories at given clock positions so this is really a big challenge.

Q – Radio Bruno is very well organized in the event arena with its own organization; does this help the overall growth of the ratings and of the company?
A – We organize directly at least 50 events and we follow then other 100 for each year. We support clients for their grand openings as well as assisting popular marathons in our territories. Following events means in any case creating a studio for our station in order to be able to perform live. Radio Bruno Estate is our Summer free tour with artist performances in the largest squares of our cities; it is a great success every year and it conveys the idea that Radio Bruno is a big brand with event capabilities too; 95.000 people have participated to the 5 events tour of last summer.

Q – Radio Bruno is certainly the most visible and the number one station of Multiradio group. How many other stations are under your property and management?
A – We have 8 stations: Radio Bruno, Radio Stella, Radio Gamma, Radio Lattemiele, Modena 90, Modena Radio City, Radio Reggio and Bologna 1. About 130 people work each day for our group.

Q – Axel Tech has been a long-time partner of Radio Bruno and his sister stations. What did you receive from the company and what do you expect from it in the future?
A – We are supplied by Axel Tech from the 90’s. It is almost 30 years when we made the choice and we continue with it; we appreciate the continuous support we receive. We also are glad sometimes to have acted as testers for new versions or new software. We sometimes received ad hoc solutions especially tailored for our needs. I am just hoping that this excellent relation can keep on going like it does now, bringing us the new technologies and organizational frontiers we need to stay at the top.

Claudio Astorri intervista Lello Orso

The interview: Claudio Astorri and Lello Orso about Music Academy in Bologna and the joint lesson with Dave Foxx

Claudio Astorri intervista Lello Orso

Axel Technology is partner of the best Broadcast training centers and schools around the world.

In one of these schools, Music Academy in Bologna (Italy), something special has happened: Lello Orso, the headmaster, had the chance to give a joint lesson with world-wide known production consultant Dave Foxx.

Our Radio Specialist Claudio Astorri had a small nice talk with him to know everything about that stunning experience.

This is a multi-Pro event! It involved the #1 Pro for Radio Production in the world and a well-known Professor at Music Academy in Bologna (Italy), a broadcasting school that is fully powered by DJ-Pro On-Air system and its software suite.

A fully Pro powered story!

Lello Orso is a respected Radio consultant who built his career thanks to many successful professional experiences in National FM stations in Italy and in a Broadcast Group in Canada where he spent more than 10 years. He has started teaching in 2018 at Music Academy in Bologna where he helped organizing his “Broadcast Media Technician Course” also by partnering with Axel Technology, which brought students to study and practice broadcast techniques while using the DJ-Pro On-Air System.

In the effort to provide a special educational event to his students Lello Orso invited for a session Dave Foxx, the well appreciated and world-wide known production consultant, the number 1 for Radio imaging on the whole planet. He simply tried but was good and lucky enough. Dave accepted the invitation and the lesson was done thanks to a video-conference from his home in the U.S.A.

Claudio Astorri exchanged a few words with Lello Orso to get the story.

Q: “Lello, please start telling me about Music Academy in Bologna, Italy”
A: “It is a 20 years experienced school, mainly oriented to students willing to improve their musical competence and step into the music industry. Many known musicians, singers and producers in Italy have been students at Music Academy. Music Academy recently decided to expand its range of courses by including Radio Broadcasting in its educational offer”

Q: “… And that’s why the ‘Broadcast Media Technician Course’ was created with you, right?”
A: “Yes! The course was funded both by the European Union and the Emilia-Romagna region allowing students to join with a cheaper access. My will has been providing students with very useful and practical education on the tools. A part has been devoted to understanding the rules and the roles in a Radio station and to develop talent and creativity on-air”

Q: “… Now to… Dave Foxx!”
A: “… I had planned some workshops on my Course with Radio professionals from the UK, Canada and the USA. That’s why I tried asking a session to Dave Foxx too. He has been creative director at NY’s ‘Z 100’ (WHTZ-New York) which is the #1 Contemporary Hit Radio station of America’s #1 Radio market. He also developed the brand ‘KTU’ (WKTU-FM) in New York. He is also an appreciated voice in many cities around the world; those 2 jobs are still the highest reference for Radio imaging in the world. His voice-overs are appreciated on-air world-wide in many cities like Beirut, Paris, Tokyo and Sydney. He also was the pioneer of Pro-Tools, a top studio production software”

Q: “How was the session with Dave Foxx?”
A: “Dave was happy and enthusiastic; he shared many views about imaging on Radio and shared precious advice on techniques. He naturally expressed love for Radio, passion for his job, and in just one hour he astonished and surprised all the students. One of those session that can change your mind, even your life. Thank you Dave Foxx for your outstanding session!”
